Ammonia Handling City and Guilds 2078-02

About this course:

The ammonia handling qualification and training is essential for you to service and maintain refrigeration systems containing anhydrous ammonia.

This course has been developed with the Refrigeration Industry Board (RIB) to reflect standards contained within BSEN 378 (safety aspects in the design, construction and installation of refrigeration systems). All courses require the learner to know the principles of refrigeration and ideally hold the

Candidates for the refrigerant handling assessment must demonstrate they are competent to handle refrigerants, including both charging and recovery. They must also show their awareness of the hazards of using such refrigerants to themselves, to other people and to the environment.

You do not need to hold a formal industry qualification such as F-Gas / ODS certificate, however it would provide you with prior knowledge of refrigerants and associated risks. All underpinning knowledge will be provided by a classroom lecture/training session along with the supply of a detailed comprehensive workbook.

Contact us if you only require Ammonia Awareness training as a 1 day event.

Course Aims

  • Prepare and act on suitable risk assessment
  • Adopt safe working procedures in order to ‘break in’ to a refrigeration system containing NH3
  • Gain practical experience in the safe handling (charging and recovry) of NH3
  • Achieve the City and Guilds 2078-02 or CSkills J02 qualification

Learning Agenda

  1. Use of safety equipment and the implications of safety standards and legislation
    • Risk Assessment, Work Permits, Method Statements, Emergency Procedures / Equipment
  2. Identification of type, state and condition of refrigerant
  3. Storage and movement of refrigerant cylinders
  4. Storage and movement of refrigerant cylinders
  5. Breaking into a system
  6. Purging lines and the system
  7. Preparation of systems before charging refrigerant
  8. Charging liquid and vapour refrigerant into new and existing systems

Assessment

  • We will perform a one-to-one practical assessment.
  • Knowledge theory will be via a series of verbal and/or written questions.
  • Practical skills will be tested by means of a practical demonstration by the candidate.
  • Candidates must demonstrate that they are competent to handle refrigerants, including both charging and recovery.
